Welcome to the Coastal Therapy Movement and Gait Lab! Our mission is to serve the needs of the Savannah running community using the most current evidence and a comprehensive approach tailored specifically to your running goals. Many of our therapists and staff are involved in the running community here in Savannah and frequently participate local group runs and races.
“First, move well… then move often” – Gray Cook
The center of our treatment of runners is evaluation of a runner’s ability to perform functional movement and detailed evaluation of running mechanics. We use slow motion video analysis with all of our runners to dissect any abnormalities. Using slow motion to capture specific movements at each joint allows us to find problematic gait deviations and target intervention to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. The first step in the treatment of any athlete is to assess for non-sport specific movement problems. With this information, treatment approach will center on improving movement. With an improved movement system, we can begin to train sport-specific locomotion – your running form. In addition to evaluation and treatment, we offer orthotic fabrication, advice on strength training post-treatment and consultation on return to running programs.
If you’ve sustained a running injury and have sought treatment from a physician who has referred you to physical therapy, our services are typically covered through insurance for physical therapy treatment. Our clinicians also perform screenings during normal clinic hours by appointment, and on select dates at other locations free of charge. A screening can help to determine if the runner needs to seek treatment, and if so, which medical provider would be most appropriate.
Runners Looking to Improve Form and Performance
For runners who have persisting pain that does not rise to a level such that they seek treatment from a physician, or for a runner who wants to improve their performance, we offer cash based rates for running specific training programs under the guidance of a physical therapist. Our specific running programs can be constructed to fit your needs. This process starts with a consultation with Marty Healy, MSPT, ATC to determine the best course of action and includes slow motion video analysis, discussion of findings, copies of all your videos and a written report to bring it all together.
In addition to injury screens, we offer consultations to determine which of our programs fit your needs and goals best. A running consult is free and must be scheduled ahead of time – the process lasts 15-20 minutes.
